That feel when you realize your featured photo is noisy because of radiation.
RIP to all those that responded to the disaster and succumbed from exposure.

It’ll take 500 seconds of exposure to kill you today.

That happened on my first birthday. Wasn’t exactly forming conscious memories at that point, but I have to assume it put a bit of a damper on the celebrations.

in ‘86 I was 2 years after starting wheel to wheel racing. About 4 weeks before winning my 1st 24 hour race at the longest day. Time flies!

As you look through the pictures, there is the comment that if you get enough radiation, it tastes like metal. If it did, the concensus was you were in trouble.

BTW. This is like watching war gun camera shots. It’s interesting until you think about people who died. I need to say, many who suffered were people like us. It was a bad day.

You can take a little bit of comfort in the fact that the western world didn’t find out about it until a few days after the fact, so your birthday went unmarred by the incident. The U.S.S.R. didn’t bother to send out a press release that their pride and joy blew up.

No, and if it had been up to them, we would have never known. Another reactor at Chernobyl had a partial meltdown in the early ‘80s and was just quietly repaired, we didn’t find that out until the ‘90s.
